Trinity of Jesus Christ
Chapter 18: Full of Grace and Truth
Previous Chapter: Zechariah's Explanation
Our Lord Jesus Christ is the very image of the invisible God—comprising the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; for when the Word within the Triune God was manifested in the flesh, He was, is, and shall be filled with the Holy Spirit and the power of the Father, a truth the Apostle John explained by stating that the Word, full of grace and truth, dwelt among us - 14.And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth - John 1:14
When the Apostle Peter speaks of this, he states that within the Triune God, the Word was revealed as Jesus Christ, and that at the same time, He was filled with the Holy Spirit and the power of the Father - 38.how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him - Acts 10:38
This is precisely what David the Psalmist expressed when he said, You [the Son of the Word] are with me; Your rod [Grace] and Your staff [Truth] comfort me - 1.The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2.He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3.He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4.Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me - Psalms 23:1-4
Moreover, the grace and truth we have received through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross are precisely what the children of Israel testified to back then as "a land flowing with milk and honey" - 25.At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. 26.And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. 27.And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit - Numbers 13:25-27
We often mistake the grace and truth mentioned in the Book of John, or the rod and staff of God spoken of by the Psalmist, or the milk and honey described as the glory of the land of Canaan, for mere objects like the sun or moon or as invisible forces; yet, this is not the case. They dwell with us as reflections of God the Father and the Holy Spirit possessing a distinct personal nature. In this verse, we see that Jesus Christ refers to them as "angels for us." - 10.See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven - Matthew 18:10
It is these whom the prophet Isaiah called "the God of Amen," "the God of Amen" - So that he who blesses himself in the earth Shall bless himself in the God of Amen; And he who swears in the earth Shall swear by the God of Amen; Because the former troubles are forgotten, And because they are hidden from My eyes - Isaiah 65:16
The Book of Revelation explicitly states that the word "Amen" refers to the Lord Himself - To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation - Rev 3:14, It was with them in mind that the Lord repeatedly said, "Amen, Amen, I say to you," throughout His ministry; however, because this has been translated as "Truly, truly," its actual meaning remains obscured - Amen, Amen, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy - John 16:20
When Jesus Christ said that the "Holy Spirit would take what belongs to Me" and give it to you, He was referring to our receiving the Spirit of Truth—that "milk and honey" which grants eternal life—from Him; likewise, when He said the "Father would take what belongs to Me" and give it to you, He was referring to our receiving the Spirit of Grace from Him - 13.When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14.He will glorify me, for He will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15.All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that He will take what is mine and declare it to you - John 16:13-15
The Lord, who had been indirectly conveying the need for correction in this manner, referred to two individuals in another teaching—speaking of one who stands with Him as a friend and another who gathers with Him rather than scattering. Who could they be? They are none other than the Son of the Father and the Son of the Holy Spirit. - 28.But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29.Or how can someone enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house. 30.Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters - Matthew 12:28-30
This can be easily understood through an example: there was a reputable jeweler in a town—the only one selling genuine gold and diamond jewelry—while the town was also filled with unscrupulous traders dealing only in imitation jewelry and fake diamonds. Consequently, this honest jeweler would declare, "If the jewelry was not sold at our shop, it is not gold," and "If we did not craft it, it is not a diamond." This implies that the genuine gold and diamonds were to be found only with that honest merchant. Similarly, when the Lord said, "He who is not with Me is against Me," it implies the existence of someone who is a true friend to the Lord; and when He said, "He who does not gather with Me scatters," it implies the existence of someone who gathers with the Lord rather than scattering.
Perhaps what the good jeweler would say when he sees a merchant who cheats the villagers by selling fake gold and diamonds when he has real gold and diamonds, he would say to himself that he is selling pewter and earthenware, just as the Lord called the scribes and Pharisees as food and drink vessels full of robbery and iniquity. - 24.You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel! 25.Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence - Matthew 23:24-25
In another place, He called them deceivers filled with deceit and wickedness - 28.So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. 29.Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, 30.saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets. 31.Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets - Matthew 23:28-31
Elsewhere, He referred to them as tombs filled with the bones of the dead and all manner of uncleanness; the Holy Trinity of the Lord is clearly revealed even in this description - 26.You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean. 27.Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness - Matthew 23:26-27
