Chapter 8: Except the sign of the prophet Jonah
Previous Chapter: Moses Explanation
Once, set of pharisees came with great anger, and asked Jesus to show a sign from heaven, so that they can believe Him as messiah, those pharisees are not looking for Messiah, otherwise they would have spoken politely to Jesus as Nicodemus, and definitely they don't want Jesus to be their Messiah, that was the reason the bible says they argued with Jesus, to them Jesus said "no sign will be given" - 10.And immediately he got into the boat with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha. The Pharisees Demand a Sign. 11.The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him. 12.And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” 13.And he left them, got into the boat again, and went to the other side - Mark 8:10-13
What is meant by "no sign will be given"?, that means they will not hear or believe Christ crucifixion, how this curse fulfilled to those pharisees? they could be the victim of Pilot, who mixed some of the Galilees blood with their offering or they could be the victim of those who killed in the pool of Shilom. but this prophetical incident tells that those who hate Jesus will not believe Christ crucifixion, even today there are many pharisees like those, they don't want Jesus to be their Savior, and they call themselves as Muslim, Jews, and many others, Since God took away the important sign from them, they will boldly say Christ was not crucified.
Here is the another set of pharisees, they did not argue with Jesus, but they were not seeking him with Love and excitment, when they asked Jesus to show a sign from heaven, He agreed to show one sign and said "no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah" - 38.Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” 39.But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40.For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth - Matthew 12:38-40
What is meant by "no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah"?, that means Jesus do have few more important signs followed by Christ Crucifixion, His resurrection, Grace of Heavenly Father, anointing of Holy Spirit, and Christ agreed to give only the sign of Crucifixion to them.
they may have an idea about Christ crucifixion, but they will not believe His resurrection, and neither they will receive the Grace of Heavenly Father, nor the anointing of Holy Spirit, even today there are pharisees like this, they will call themselves as Hindus, Atheist, and many others, Since God gave only one sign, they will have an idea about Christ crucifixion, but they will not accept His resurrection, and Grace of Heavenly Father, anointing of Holy Spirit.
If I give only one sign, it means that there are some other signs as well, which indicate the grace that comes to us from the Father and the sign of the anointing that we get from the Holy Spirit, which is what the Lord implied in Jonah and the Great One is here in Solomon - 41.The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. 42.The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here - Matthew 12:41-42
Jesus Christ taught that if we were to possess only the mark of the cross—without receiving the mark of the Father's grace and the mark of the Holy Spirit's anointing—the outcome would be pitiable - 43.When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. 44.Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45.Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation - Matthew 12:43-45
The Old Testament refers to those who receive only the sign of the Cross of Jesus Christ—but not the sign of the Father's grace or the anointing of the Holy Spirit—as Pharaoh; the New Testament calls them vipers, the wicked, scribes, and Pharisees. The Book of Luke records that those who glorify Mary also join this group; that is why those who accept Mary as a deity neither receive God's grace nor the anointing of the Holy Spirit - 27.As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” 28.But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” 29.When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30.For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31.The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. 32.The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here - Luke 11:27-32
