Trinity of Jesus Christ
Chapter 9: Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?
Previous Chapter: Except the sign of the prophet Jonah
In this chapter, we will examine with Biblical evidence that our Savior Jesus Christ is not only the Son of the Word, but also the Son of the Father and the Son of the Holy Spirit, and that all three of them tasted death for our salvation, and Christ revealed this heavenly secret in this bible verse - But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God - Luke 9:27
It is a common opinion that the Lord said this about some of his disciples, and said "there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God", if that were the case, wouldn't the Bible have recorded the details regarding the death of those disciples?
before that, we must understand that "seeing the Kingdom of God coming" means "crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ", basically seeing the Kingdom of God means the salvation that we receive through death of our savior Jesus Christ, that is why the Bible describes Joseph of Arimathea as one who was waiting for the Kingdom of God - Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus - Mark 15:43
but for Jesus, "seeing the Kingdom of God coming" means, satisfying God's anger on the cross and breaking the separation wall between us and God. so when Jesus said "there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God", Jesus is talking about himself, this can be easily understood through an example: consider a poor widow who used say that her body would not rest until seeing all her children settled down, so she worked hard and died, after all her children were educated and well-established.
Similarly, the Lord stated that "there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God", he was talking about his death, Son of the Word, but also the Son of the Father and the Son of the Holy Spirit
To reveal who these individuals were, the Lord took His disciples with Him up a mountain - 28.About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29.As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30.Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31.They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem - Luke 9:28-31
Thus, when the Lord said that some of those standing there would not taste death before seeing the Kingdom of God, He was referring to the Son of the Father and the Son of the Holy Spirit—who appeared as Moses and Elijah!
JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS
The Apostle Paul, who counseled us under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, states in this verse that we should know only Jesus Christ, who was crucified for us - 1.And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. 2.For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified - 1 Corinthians 2:1-2
If the sole purpose were simply for us to know about the crucified Jesus Christ, would it have been necessary for all four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—to mention the two individuals crucified alongside the Lord? If the objective were merely to record the fulfillment of the prophecy that He was "numbered with the transgressors," surely a single Gospel account stating that others were crucified with the Lord would have sufficed. Why, then, do all four Gospels specify that two individuals were crucified with Him—and specifically note that one was crucified on His right side and the other on His left?
When talking about Jesus Christ's crucifixion, Matthew and Mark knew that Jesus Christ was crucified with the Son of the Word, the Son of the Father, and the Son of the Holy Spirit, but the three of them were inseparable from the attitude of being one God. have written that Jesus Christ was crucified, and then they mentioned that the king of the Jews was written on the cross, and then they wrote that two thieves were crucified - 22.And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23.Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it. 24.And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take. 25.Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him. 26.And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS. 27.With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left. 28.So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, And He was numbered with the transgressors - Mark 15:22-28
But Luke and John, to explain that the Son of the Word, the Son of the Father, and the Son of the Holy Spirit suffered as if they were crucified separately, say that two men were crucified with Him, and then write in three languages, "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews." - 17.And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18.where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19.Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20.Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. 21.Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews". 22.Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written - John 19:17-22
As we know through the Gospel books of Matthew and Mark that the two thieves were crucified with Jesus, we only have the idea of two men, but here the apostle John is not talking about the thieves, but only about Christ. Also, this verse can be read in two ways, the worldly meaning is that Jesus was crucified with two earthly men, i.e. two thieves, the spiritual meaning is that the Son of the Word was crucified with the Son of the Father and the Son of the Holy Spirit, so the correct translation of the Greek original is - There they crucified him with two men, one on one side, and another on the other, and in the middle - crucified Jesus.
Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani
It was only when these two—declaring that they could no longer bear to witness the suffering of the Son of the Word—gave up their lives, that the agonized cry "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani" arose from the Son of the Word - 45.Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. 46.And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 47.Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!” 48.Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink. 49.The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.” 50.And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit - Matthew 27:45-50
There have been instances where a wife, upon her husband's death, wept out, "Why have you left me alone?" and gave up their lives also, this truly reflects the pure, unblemished love that existed between them.
Thus, to illustrate that—within the Triune Godhead—the Son of the Father and the Son of the Holy Spirit had to die first, followed by the death of the Son of the Word, Moses commanded that a lamb be slaughtered and its blood sprinkled in three specific places: first on the two doorposts, and then on the lintel - 5.Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats. 6.Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight. 7.And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it. 8.Then they shall eat the flesh on that night; roasted in fire, with unleavened bread and with bitter herbs they shall eat it - Exodus 12:5-8
Coming of all three
The Lord, who spoke of their death by saying that there are some who stand here, also said that they will come with me at his coming - 26.Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels - Luke 9:26
Whom did the Lord say here with the glory of the Father and the glory of the holy angels? The Lord gave them the grace to visit his disciples on the mountain of transfiguration, it is the Son of the Father and the Son of the Holy Spirit who appeared as Moses and Elijah!
Ruling of all three
James and John, who were brothers among the Lord's disciples, desired to sit with the Lord and reign in the Kingdom of Heaven; this is recorded in the Bible - 35.Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Him, saying, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask.” 36.And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 37.They said to Him, “Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, in Your glory.” 38.But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” 39.They said to Him, “We are able.” So Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink the cup that I drink, and with the baptism I am baptized with you will be baptized; 40.but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared.” 41.And when the ten heard it, they began to be greatly displeased with James and John - Mark 10:35-41
Why is this recorded in the Bible? Is it merely so we might understand what was in the hearts of those disciples? Certainly not; rather, it is written to reveal the profound mystery that two individuals will sit at the Lord's right and left hands and reign in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Who were the ones God predestined? What if the Lord had predestined Moses and Elijah to sit at His right and left hands? He would have asked James and John, "Are you ready to suffer just as Moses and Elijah did?" What if the Lord had predestined Stephen and Antipas for that role? He would have asked, "Are you ready to suffer like Stephen and Antipas?" But instead, the Lord asked, "Can you drink the cup that I drink and be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?
Because the one who is going to be on the right hand and the left hand of the Son of the Word is the Son of the Father and the Son of the Holy Spirit, that is, the Triune God who is going to rule over us. That's why Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you ask"
What is the reason for the plural of holy angels?
But what is the reason for referring to the "Son of the Holy Spirit" in the plural as "holy angels"? It is a common belief that "holy angels" refers to believers; is this correct? Before examining this, let us look at how the Book of Genesis portrays Jesus Christ—the True Light [John 1:9]. To illustrate the nature of Jesus Christ, God created three types of celestial bodies: the sun represents the Son of the Father, the moon represents the Son of the Word, and the stars represent the Son of the Holy Spirit. While God created a single sun and a single moon to provide us with light, why did He create the stars in such countless numbers? It is because God created these innumerable stars to reveal the mystery that the Son of the Holy Spirit fills us all - 14.And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons,[a] and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day - Genesis 1:14-19
To illustrate the nature of the Holy Spirit—who fills us all—Solomon the Wise described Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, as the "only child." Further expounding on the Trinity, he described the Son of the Word as "beautiful as the moon," the Son of the Father as "radiant as the sun," and the Son of the Holy Spirit as an "army with flying banners." - 9.My dove, my perfect one, is the only one, the only one of her mother, pure to her who bore her. The young women saw her and called her blessed; the queens and concubines also, and they praised her. 10.Who is this who looks down like the dawn, beautiful as the moon, bright as the sun, awesome as an army with banners? - Song of Solomon 6:9-10
It was precisely because the three of them were united as the one God—Jesus—that the disciples asked the Lord, "What is the sign of *Your* coming?" - As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age? - Matthew 24:3
